Last Crew's Call to Action

Scripture

Genesis 2:18-25 NIV

The LORD God said, “It is not good for the man to be alone. I will make a helper suitable for him.” Now the LORD God had formed out of the ground all the wild animals and all the birds in the sky. He brought them to the man to see what he would name them; and whatever the man called each living creature, that was its name. So the man gave names to all the livestock, the birds in the sky and all the wild animals. But for Adam no suitable helper was found. So the LORD God caused the man to fall into a deep sleep; and while he was sleeping, he took one of the man’s ribs and then closed up the place with flesh. Then the LORD God made a woman from the rib he had taken out of the man, and he brought her to the man. The man said, “This is now bone of my bones and flesh of my flesh; she shall be called ‘woman,’ for she was taken out of man.” That is why a man leaves his father and mother and is united to his wife, and they become one flesh. Adam and his wife were both naked, and they felt no shame.

Main Idea

Marriage is like two precious metals combined together to form a stronger, more resilient and inseparable new creation. Each metal is complete on its own but bonded together can withstand the pressure and resistance of life. Likewise, marriage is not about two incomplete people looking for someone to complete them, but rather it’s about individuals who are complete in Christ that creates a bond that gives God glory. Men and women can live in harmony when they follow God’s purpose for their lives. It’s when we don’t have an understanding of God’s purpose for marriage that many marriages fail. We tend to make assumptions and fantasies of our ideal version of marriage versus what God’s motivation for marriage is. God’s word will provide the secrets and insight to a great marriage. Whether you’re single or married, you can have a great future when you are aligned to God’s vision of relationships..

Vision is the destination. Motivation is the transportation.

1. God’s Message

Throughout scripture, God clarifies that marriage is a direct parallel of how His son Jesus loves the church, and how we as followers of Christ are called to first love Him, and carry that same selfless, sacrificial, and holy love towards our spouse. Aligning with Christ means being God-centered, not self-centered, in everything we do. God calls us to use our relationships, endeavors, and daily routines as reflections of His promise. A God-centered marriage is a parallel to the message of the Gospel. Following God’s word, just like marriage, can be hard work that is worth it.

Jesus pursues us — we are called to pursue others in humble care
Jesus sacrificed for us — we are called to serve through sacrifice
Jesus loves us unconditionally — we are called to extend unconditional love

When two become one, it is not a moment of completion, but a new creation

How does God use relationships to shape us in His image?

2. God’s Master Plan

Whether or not we are always aware of it, God has a plan. Jeremiah 29:11 reminds us, ‘For I know the plans I have for you,’ declares the Lord, plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you a hope and a future.  In seasons of singleness, in relationships, in loss, in pain, in uncertainty, we can trust that God is working all things together for our good. We move forward with faithful expectation that God’s plan is always better than our own.

Our relationships give glory to God
Our relationships portray the reconciliation of Jesus
Our relationships illustrate that Christ loves the church

Something beautiful can ignite as we trust God, in the mystery.

How does walking together in love reveal God’s mystery of Jesus’ pursuit, sacrifice and love for us?

Summary

As individuals we reflect God’s image, and as our stories move forward in the context of marriage, God’s master plan also moves forward. God chose marriage as a powerful parallel to the message of the Gospel. As two imperfect people forgive and grow daily, we see a picture of Jesus’ pursuit, sacrifice , and love for his bridegroom, the church.  As we are purified by accepting Jesus’ love for us by faith, so too can the embracing of a loving partner, bring about holiness in our hearts. It is not our job to make each other holy, however learning how to love the way Jesus does, can motivate all of us to lead and live holy lives together.

Call To Action

This week meditate on God’s Mysteries by spending time in His word and in prayer discovering His Master Plan for your marriage. Write down the vision for your marriage (or future marriage) in your journal.

Scripture

Ephesians 3:20-21 NKJV

Now to Him who is able to do exceedingly abundantly above all that we ask or think, according to the power that works in us, to Him be glory in the church by Christ Jesus to all generations, forever and ever. Amen.

Main Idea

Life often doesn't meet our expectations, leading to frustration and disappointment. We may hope for one outcome, only to be met with something entirely different, creating a gap between what we expected and what we experienced. This gap can lead us to question God, our faith, and our hope. But through stories like that of Lazarus and Job, we learn that God isn’t in the business of just meeting expectations, He’s in the business of exceeding them.

God’s power to perform exceeds our ability to ask

1. Hope and Expectation

Faith grows through hope and trusting God’s timing. Positive expectations can fuel faith, while unmet expectations can lead to disappointment. Often, we expect something specific from God but find ourselves limiting Him to only a particular outcome. When we don’t see Him come through just as we expected, we can find ourselves frustrated and disappointed — where was God? The truth is, God is always at work. We may not always see Him moving, or understand His plan, but He has something greater in mind.

Disappointment can tempt us to give up on expectations, but it’s an opportunity to strengthen our faith
God’s plans always exceed our expectations
Don't allow your expectations of what God was “supposed” to do get in the way of what He wants to do

If God always met your expectations, how could He ever exceed them?

What areas of your life are you waiting for God to show up? How can you operate from faith in the present as you hope for the future?

2. Endurance and Enjoyment

Job’s story is a powerful example of enduring pain and disappointment without losing faith. Even in his suffering, Job declared, “Though He slay me, yet will I hope in Him.” Despite the immense loss, he continued to trust God, showing us that our hope can remain, even in the midst of struggle. Endurance is the ability to trust that God is working, even when we can’t see it.

Endurance strengthens our faith through trials
God hasn’t called us to merely endure life, He’s called us to enjoy it
Enjoying life is appreciating the little, it’s not a pain-free life, but a grateful one

We can say: “God, I don’t understand everything but I trust you in everything”

How has a difficult season strengthened your appreciation for God’s blessings?

Summary

Possibly the greatest source of frustration in life is unmet expectations. The difference between what we expected versus what we experienced often leads us to stop expecting. But there’s an invitation of faith amidst the frustration. Don’t lower your expectations; lift your faith. Give God something to exceed. God can do it, the question is: can you believe it?

Call To Action

Identify areas where you may be limiting God by expecting a specific outcome. Practice finding gratitude by celebrating the little things.
