“Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. 29 Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. 30 For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.”
Those that enjoy frequent travel know that traveling with light luggage allows the time through the airport to become a breeze. Also, you’d know that having lots of luggage adds extra steps, and delays you on your way to where you want to get. When it comes to relationships, the lighter we arrive, the easier it will be. Meaning when we are able to address baggage like: passive aggression, laziness, excuses, unforgiveness, amongst so much other “luggage” that weighs us down, we are able to enjoy relationships the way God intended them to be. How do we remove the luggage? By surrendering completely to God. We can believe in God, but if we don’t surrender who we are to him, we cannot be who he’s called us to be. If we want healthy relationships, we have to be healthy individuals.
Just because you have faith, doesn't mean that you are free.
According to scripture, marriage is two becoming one. Problems don’t go away after marriage, they just multiply. As you unpack it’s important to address the issue, not the symptom.
Our impulses, and natural reactions, may seem normal to the world, but they are not always God’s way. Healthy boundaries for behavior in relationships are meant to prevent destruction.
As we take off on the relationship journey, we have to first inspect our baggage to see what we’re bringing with us. It takes humility to acknowledge our own issues and hang-ups. Yet, it’s necessary for us to assess and address our stuff in order to establish safe spaces for respect and growth. At each step along the way, we have to consistently make the conscious choice to forgive and surrender our shortcomings, our baggage, to Jesus. With Jesus, there is no additional fee for checked baggage. So hang up your hang-ups on the cross.
Take some time to reflect on the baggage you’ve been carrying that you need to address. Write down practical steps towards addressing it and releasing it to God.
