Scripture

Matthew 21:6-9 NIV

6 The disciples went and did as Jesus had instructed them. 7 They brought the donkey and the colt and placed their cloaks on them for Jesus to sit on. 8 A very large crowd spread their cloaks on the road, while others cut branches from the trees and spread them on the road. 9 The crowds that went ahead of him and those that followed shouted, “Hosanna to the Son of David!” “Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord!” “Hosanna in the highest heaven!”

Main Idea

Palm Sunday is a day that we remember Jesus, the long-awaited Messiah, triumphantly entering Jerusalem for the Passover feast. It is the start of what we call “Holy Week,” or the week leading up to the death and resurrection of Jesus. This was one of the busiest days of the year in the city, yet we learn a lot about Jesus by looking at the way that he carried himself on this day. He chose the seemingly most unworthy animal, a donkey, to carry him into the city, but this shows us that Jesus is gracious and can use anyone and everyone to bring glory to his Kingdom. This was also the first time that Jesus publicly accepted the praises of the people in his ministry. Although he knew that they would soon betray him, turning him over to be tried and crucified, he still chose to show them love and remain obedient to what God had called him to do during that week. Finally, even prior to his entry, he chose to live a sinless life, making him the perfect sacrifice to take on the sin of the world in death and redeem man’s relationship with God forever through his resurrection. He willingly offered his life to save the world, and this is why we celebrate.

There is a big difference between being selected for service and offering your service.

1. Perfect Lamb

In Jewish tradition, the blood of a spotless lamb represented the covering of sins. This representation turned into a tangible and real covering of sins by the sacrifice Jesus made on the cross. Jesus offered himself as the perfect lamb to pay for our sins. We no longer have to sacrifice animals, but accept his sacrifice. He not only died for us but lived for us.

John 1:29

Behold, the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world!

Jesus left his throne to live a “mundane” sinless life on Earth for his children
Jesus honored each and every day leading up to his sacrifice, we too are to honor each and every day God grants us
Jesus triumphed over his flesh to become the ultimate sacrifice for us

We don't need to achieve perfection, we just need to receive Jesus

Why do we feel we need to be perfect to get close to God? How has Jesus shown you otherwise?

2.  Gracious King

Jesus chose to humble himself and ride on the lowliest of animals when being presented as king to show that his grace and power extends to everyone, regardless of who they are.

Matthew 21:5

“Say to Daughter Zion “see, your king comes to you gentle riding in a donkey and on a colt, the foal of a donkey”

Jesus doesn’t call the qualified, he qualifies those he calls
No matter how small, young, damaged, or inexperienced you are, He can and will choose to use you
We are often immobilized as Christian’s not due to our lack of faith in Him but because of our lack of faith that he loves us

He knows us most, yet he loves us most

Can you think of a time God called you to do something you didn’t think you were worthy or capable of doing?

Summary

Palm Sunday is a remembrance of Jesus’ choice to take the place of the spotless lamb and make the ultimate sacrifice. Hosanna went from a cry for help to a shout of exaltation. We no longer have to scramble for the perfect sacrifice because Jesus gave us salvation here and now. Despite our flaws, God knows us to the core and gave us exactly what we needed. Jesus pursues us before we could even seek him. He knows us the best and loves us the most.

Ephesians 3:20-21 NKJV

Main Idea

Life often doesn't meet our expectations, leading to frustration and disappointment. We may hope for one outcome, only to be met with something entirely different, creating a gap between what we expected and what we experienced. This gap can lead us to question God, our faith, and our hope. But through stories like that of Lazarus and Job, we learn that God isn’t in the business of just meeting expectations, He’s in the business of exceeding them.

God’s power to perform exceeds our ability to ask

1. Hope and Expectation

Faith grows through hope and trusting God’s timing. Positive expectations can fuel faith, while unmet expectations can lead to disappointment. Often, we expect something specific from God but find ourselves limiting Him to only a particular outcome. When we don’t see Him come through just as we expected, we can find ourselves frustrated and disappointed — where was God? The truth is, God is always at work. We may not always see Him moving, or understand His plan, but He has something greater in mind.

Disappointment can tempt us to give up on expectations, but it’s an opportunity to strengthen our faith
God’s plans always exceed our expectations
Don't allow your expectations of what God was “supposed” to do get in the way of what He wants to do

If God always met your expectations, how could He ever exceed them?

What areas of your life are you waiting for God to show up? How can you operate from faith in the present as you hope for the future?

2. Endurance and Enjoyment

Job’s story is a powerful example of enduring pain and disappointment without losing faith. Even in his suffering, Job declared, “Though He slay me, yet will I hope in Him.” Despite the immense loss, he continued to trust God, showing us that our hope can remain, even in the midst of struggle. Endurance is the ability to trust that God is working, even when we can’t see it.

Endurance strengthens our faith through trials
God hasn’t called us to merely endure life, He’s called us to enjoy it
Enjoying life is appreciating the little, it’s not a pain-free life, but a grateful one

We can say: “God, I don’t understand everything but I trust you in everything”

How has a difficult season strengthened your appreciation for God’s blessings?

Summary

Possibly the greatest source of frustration in life is unmet expectations. The difference between what we expected versus what we experienced often leads us to stop expecting. But there’s an invitation of faith amidst the frustration. Don’t lower your expectations; lift your faith. Give God something to exceed. God can do it, the question is: can you believe it?

Call To Action

Identify areas where you may be limiting God by expecting a specific outcome. Practice finding gratitude by celebrating the little things.
