Isaiah 43:18-19

“Forget the former things; do not dwell on the past. See, I am doing a new thing! Now it springs up; do you not perceive it? I am making a way in the desert and streams in the wasteland.”

Main Idea

It can be tempting to discount old in search of something new. We live in a world that doesn't value old. We constantly strive for new things. New job, new car, new relationship. By definition, new means unused. We constantly search for something new because we start to feel used. Just because we’re used doesn’t mean we’re not useful. Take the Bible for example — though it may not be new, it’s fresh. Though it may be old, it’s not stale. As we reflect on 8 years of VOUS, we might not be new anymore, but we are fresh. By the grace of God, we have been used in mighty ways. We are getting older, but we are not stale. God is doing a FRESH thing! ‍

Let the Word become the lens that you experience life

1. Live Forward

Throughout our lives, we will experience breakdowns and breakthroughs. It’s easy to reminisce on the good old days when we’re feeling discouraged. When we feel like things aren’t going our way, we tend to forsake God’s plan for our preferences, leading us to miss what God wants to do in our present moment. The good news is that it’s never too late to look ahead, forgetting the former things and establishing in our mind, heart, and spirit that with God, the best is truly yet to come.

A discouraging day is different than a defeated spirit
God’s kingdom is not about our preferences
When we choose our preference over his plan, we miss his presence

The past is a good place to reference but not a place to reside

Share a time when you chose God’s plan over your preference. What was the outcome?

2. Fix Your Focus

Perception is a game-changer. Shifting our mindset is one of the most powerful tools in our arsenal. We find whatever we focus on; if we look for problems, we find them. If we look for provision, we find it. Sometimes we simply need to open our eyes and acknowledge that the sovereign hand of God is moving in our midst. Our problems are a platform for him to perform miracles in the middle of our circumstances — we just need eyes to see our problems through his perspective.

God doesn’t have a provision problem, we have a perspective problem
The right perspective produces patience
You can have 99 problems, but your perspective shouldn’t be one

Our theology shapes our experience, not the other way around

Do you feel like you need a new thing? How can you adjust your thinking to have a fresh outlook?

Summary

As we look towards the future and shift our perspective, our eyes are opened to see everything God is doing. Instead of fearing the future, we fix our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of our faith. He is always doing a new thing — whether He’s working in our circumstances or reframing our perspective in the waiting, He is always moving.

This week, take time to reflect on Isaiah 43. Write down one area you are asking God to give you a fresh start in? Until the next Crew Week, journal and reflect on what God is showing you! Be prepared to come back and share.

Now to Him who is able to do exceedingly abundantly above all that we ask or think, according to the power that works in us, to Him be glory in the church by Christ Jesus to all generations, forever and ever. Amen.

Main Idea

Life often doesn't meet our expectations, leading to frustration and disappointment. We may hope for one outcome, only to be met with something entirely different, creating a gap between what we expected and what we experienced. This gap can lead us to question God, our faith, and our hope. But through stories like that of Lazarus and Job, we learn that God isn’t in the business of just meeting expectations, He’s in the business of exceeding them.

God’s power to perform exceeds our ability to ask

1. Hope and Expectation

Faith grows through hope and trusting God’s timing. Positive expectations can fuel faith, while unmet expectations can lead to disappointment. Often, we expect something specific from God but find ourselves limiting Him to only a particular outcome. When we don’t see Him come through just as we expected, we can find ourselves frustrated and disappointed — where was God? The truth is, God is always at work. We may not always see Him moving, or understand His plan, but He has something greater in mind.

Disappointment can tempt us to give up on expectations, but it’s an opportunity to strengthen our faith
God’s plans always exceed our expectations
Don't allow your expectations of what God was “supposed” to do get in the way of what He wants to do

If God always met your expectations, how could He ever exceed them?

What areas of your life are you waiting for God to show up? How can you operate from faith in the present as you hope for the future?

2. Endurance and Enjoyment

Job’s story is a powerful example of enduring pain and disappointment without losing faith. Even in his suffering, Job declared, “Though He slay me, yet will I hope in Him.” Despite the immense loss, he continued to trust God, showing us that our hope can remain, even in the midst of struggle. Endurance is the ability to trust that God is working, even when we can’t see it.

Endurance strengthens our faith through trials
God hasn’t called us to merely endure life, He’s called us to enjoy it
Enjoying life is appreciating the little, it’s not a pain-free life, but a grateful one

We can say: “God, I don’t understand everything but I trust you in everything”

How has a difficult season strengthened your appreciation for God’s blessings?

Summary

Possibly the greatest source of frustration in life is unmet expectations. The difference between what we expected versus what we experienced often leads us to stop expecting. But there’s an invitation of faith amidst the frustration. Don’t lower your expectations; lift your faith. Give God something to exceed. God can do it, the question is: can you believe it?

Call To Action

Identify areas where you may be limiting God by expecting a specific outcome. Practice finding gratitude by celebrating the little things.
