To the elders among you, I appeal as a fellow elder and a witness of Christ’s sufferings who also will share in the glory to be revealed: Be shepherds of God’s flock that is under your care, watching over them—not because you must, but because you are willing, as God wants you to be; not pursuing dishonest gain, but eager to serve; not lording it over those entrusted to you, but being examples to the flock. And when the Chief Shepherd appears, you will receive the crown of glory that will never fade away. In the same way, you who are younger, submit yourselves to your elders. All of you, clothe yourselves with humility toward one another, because, “God opposes the proud but shows favor to the humble.” Humble yourselves, therefore, under God’s mighty hand, that he may lift you up in due time. (NIV)

We have all been there. There’s an important event or party and we simply can’t figure out what to wear. After going through every fabric and every shoe, we find it, the perfect outfit that will make us stand out. When picking out what to wear, let's dress for success and clothe ourselves in the promises of God with an extra layer of humility. As Christ followers we have a duty to humble ourselves before one another. The world often teaches us to chase after recognition, to be top in our class and chase after fancy titles. Yet, to reach what God truly has for us, we must first humble ourselves and serve others. Jesus is our example. He humbled himself to death, even death on a cross and served so that we can have new life. When choosing humility, we don’t do so out of obligation but out of declaration for him. Therefore, let us live a life of humility, mirroring our savior, the one who gave it all.
Humility is not humiliating, don’t be afraid to humble yourself.
Time and time again the Bible reminds us that choosing humility over pride makes God proud. When we assume a posture of humility, it changes our perspective. We look at our responsibilities differently, we put others first instead of ourselves, and we seek to encourage others instead of trying to impress them.
Our mission is to put God on display so the world would see what a good God looks like. As Christians we are representing Jesus. Being good leaders means modeling our lives after him, loving and serving others as he did.
People can usually tell where we are headed by the way we are dressed. Flip flops, shorts, and sunglasses usually indicate the beach. A fancy dress, a wedding. Spandex, to the gym. When we put on humility we are on the path to purpose. When God created us he always intended for us to serve one another. “I was born to help someone and someone was born to help me.” We all have seasons of discouragement and seasons in which we feel purposeless. We can fight those seasons by putting our pride to the side. It’s not just about our success but how many people we’ve helped be successful. We can fight by displaying Jesus, walking in humility on a daily basis. We can fight by reminding ourselves that a purposeful path is a path of service. So where are you headed? Head to purpose by wearing humility.
Humble yourself! Find ways that you can anonymously be a blessing to others. Leaving a random note of encouragement, allowing someone to skip you in line, paying for a stranger's food, we don’t need credit. Glory be to God!
