Each of us has a unique relationship with our dads. For some, Dad was your first superhero, a man that you could (and still can) depend on without any hesitation. For others, Dad was your arch nemesis, whose presence brought conflict and terror into your life. For others still, Dad was a ghost, whose absence by way of death, abandonment, or another cause for unavailability left us wondering who he even was.
In any case, your relationship with your earthly father informs your relationship with your Heavenly Father. When the former relationship is fraught with heartache, it can deter you from seeking a relationship with God because deep down, you are afraid that He too will hurt or disappoint you. However, as found in His word, your dad is nothing like God.
Where Your Dad was Limited, God is Limitless
“Do you not know? Have you not heard? The Lord is the everlasting God, the Creator of the ends of the earth. He will not grow tired or weary, and his understanding no one can fathom.”-Isaiah 40:28
In this verse, the prophet Isaiah expresses the eternal nature of God. Our Heavenly Father has power that never runs out, and a wisdom that is beyond our comprehension. With this in mind, know that God will always provide the guidance and the energy you need to carry out His will for your life.
Where you Dad’s Love May Have Been Finite, God’s Love is Everlasting
“And I pray that you, being rooted and established in love, may have power, together with all the Lord’s holy people, to grasp how wide and long and high and deep is the love of Christ,” Ephesians 3: 17b-18
Just like His power and wisdom, God’s love for you knows no bounds. It was sealed when he sent his own son Jesus Christ to die on your behalf and on behalf of humanity overall. He quite literally went to hell and back for you so that you could be reconciled to Him.
Where Your Dad’s Resources are Defined, God’s Resources are Beyond Measure
“The earth is the Lord’s, and everything in it, the world, and all who live in it;” Psalms 24:1
Unlike your father whose circumstances may render him unable to care for us, we can trust God to provide our every need. Even in situations where we feel as if we have little, God shows us through His word and His actions that we will never go without as long as we trust Him.
Your father is nothing like God. Whether he was good, bad, or absent, your father on Earth cannot even begin to compare to your Father in Heaven.
