Summary: The book of Acts is considered to be volume two of a two-part work known today as Luke-Acts. In the Bible, both the book of Luke and the book of Acts were written by Luke, an apostle of Jesus. Acts gives an account of Jesus’ ascension into heaven, the coming of the Holy Spirit, the birth of the early church, and how the message of Jesus began to spread around the world.

Acts begins with Jesus’ last 40 days on earth after His resurrection. His focus was to teach the disciples about the Kingdom of God on earth. He commissioned them to spread His message to Jerusalem, neighboring regions Judea and Samaria, and then to the rest of the nations. While Jesus’ time on earth was about to come to an end, He reminded them that the Holy Spirit would be with them soon.

On the day of Pentecost, 10 days after Jesus ascended into heaven, the Holy Spirit descended on the disciples. Acts 2:2-4 says, “Suddenly a sound like the blowing of a violent wind came from heaven and filled the whole house where they were sitting. They saw what seemed to be tongues of fire that separated and came to rest on each of them.

All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit enabled them.” After receiving the Holy Spirit, they were empowered to preach the message of Jesus with boldness and many people were saved. This marks the birth of the early church – the gathering of believers. Even today, when we choose to acknowledge Jesus as our Savior, we receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. It’s through the Holy Spirit that Jesus guides, empowers, and transforms us.

Through the rest of the book of Acts, Jesus’ disciples do exactly what Jesus instructed. They began preaching and teaching in Jerusalem, then in Judea and Samaria, and then to the rest of the nations and the ends of the earth. The book of Acts recounts the disciples’ experiences and the persecution they faced, the characteristics and growth of the early church, and the fulfillment of many Old Testament prophecies. While church today looks different than the early church, there are key themes from the book of Acts that hold true for us in modern culture.

SERMON: DATING DELILAH

From Fixation to Fury

What are you fixated on? What captures your attention? Where your focus goes your life will follow. Are you focused on the spirit or the flesh? Being spirit-led leads to the fruit of the spirit. However, when your flesh controls you, it leads to the fruit of the flesh.

When Winning Leaves You Empty

Have you ever really wanted something, finally got it, and then realized it didn’t make you feel as good as you thought it would? You’re winning on the outside, but feel empty on the inside. Like Samson, we must recognize that our deepest needs can’t be met by success alone. Only God can fill that hollow place.

When Deliverance Isn't Enough

We don’t have a deliverance problem; we have a healing problem. In order to heal and break the chains of shame, guilt, anger, addiction, and more, we must first reveal the unaddressed pain. Not only must we reveal the things weighing us down, but we must also remove all the things that cause our chains.

Breaking Up With Delilah

Daily our mind and thoughts are given an invitation to engage in such things like, lust, envy, greed, pride and so much more. But we have been given free will to decide whether to take on this invitation or not. Through God’s power we are able to resist the devil and he will flee from us.

Reflect

Like anything we value, relationships take maintenance. Before we look outward, we must look inward, examining our view of relationships. Take 10 minutes to ask yourself these 10 relationship radar questions.

How am I reflecting Christ’s love in my relationships (John 13:34-35)?

Do my relationships draw me closer to God, or do they distract me from Him (1 Corinthians 15:33)?

How well do I practice patience, kindness, and selflessness in my relationships (1 Corinthians 13:4-7)?

Am I quick to forgive others as Christ has forgiven me (Colossians 3:13)?

Do I honor God in my communication, speaking truth in love and avoiding gossip or negativity (Ephesians 4:29)?

How do I balance grace and truth when addressing conflict in my relationships (Ephesians 4:15)?

Am I serving others with humility and a heart of love, following Jesus’ example (Philippians 2:3-5)?

Do I set healthy boundaries that protect my spiritual and emotional well-being while still loving others well (Proverbs 4:23)?

How do I pray for and with the people in my life, seeking God’s wisdom in my relationships (James 5:16)?

In what ways can I grow in being a faithful friend, spouse, family member, or leader, reflecting God’s faithfulness (Proverbs 17:17)?
